Doing The Hula At Drums Of The Pacific Luau in Maui

Travel
When you head to a place like Maui or anywhere in Hawaii, you can easily get focused on the beautiful beaches and draw dropping hikes to take. Something I’ve found so amazing and intriguing is the people that live there. There is so much deep history running through the land that makes it even more beautiful and the Drums of the Pacific Luau at the Hyatt Regency, which I’m calling the best Maui luau, does an incredible job of telling the stories. We are so thankful they invited us to take part in the tradition so we can tell you about it.

why this is the best luau in Maui

From the moment you arrive you are greeted with a lei that symbolizes honor that stems from the days of royalty long ago. There is meaning behind everything and although one may initially feel this is a “touristy” thing to do, it’s quite the opposite as you get an inside look at the emotional history that unveils through each sway and movement of the hands. After you get adorned with your lei, you are welcomed further with their traditional drink, the Mai Tai. I don’t drink alcohol so I can’t speak of how it tastes, but it certainly looks beautiful with the orchid atop. No detail is missed, even down to the beverages and food for the kids too.

storytelling, drums & food

After everyone has been walked to their seats, the storytelling begins. The luau is usually narrated during the dances or beforehand, even the unearthing of the puaa, or pork, is explained to make sure every bite is appreciated and get your taste buds working as they walk by with it. Speaking of the food…wow. Everything from huli huli chicken, ahi poke, taro root rolls with lilikoi butter, to lomi lomi salmon. Then, dessert. You head out to a dessert bar out by the water equip with the sunset, pineapple upside down cake, bread pudding and chocolate macadamia nut cream brownies.

After you’ve filled yourself with a surfer worthy diet, the show continues on. They take you back in time to tell the stories through the drum dances of Tahiti, Hawaiian hula, and Samoan fire spectacles. For the romantics, there may even be a few not-your-average love stories thrown in as well with fire and coconut bras to keep things interesting. If you feel brave enough, you can learn to hula, but beware, the keiki, or kids, may show you up (speaking from experience).
