The Perks of Taking Kids To Your Local Farmer’s Market

Best Healthy Life, Food, Fun With Kids, Tampa

Something big on our list right now is fruits and veggies. We’ve been on this journey to better health for over a month now and besides seeing myself feel better, the best part is seeing my kids enjoy it all too. This week we ventured to two local farmer’s markets in Tampa and they were like kids in a candy store, minus the candy of course. I’m finding that visiting a farmer’s market with kids has it’s perks besides the obvious nutrition side!

perks of going to a local farmers market with kids:

kids love food.

It seems like they can never get enough to eat so you can’t go wrong taking them to a place solely full of food. I can’t promise there won’t be a bite in an apple before you make it to the check out counter, but given the nature of the relaxed environment, I’m sure the cashier will understand.

kids love to help.

Giving kids a task lights up their world. Asking the kids to carry the baskets or reach for a specific fruit keeps them engaged in the shopping trip. Heading to a farmer’s market with kids fills up their love cup as it does yours as you enjoy quality time together.

it makes them want to try new things.

Just as we like to see a reward from our work, kids love the same. If they’ve helped gather the fruits and veggies at the market, they are more likely to try them. They’ve looked at them, asked questions about them and now, the best part…want to try them. Their curiosity has been peaked and it will come full circle on a conclusion with tasting.

they get to learn new things.

It’s like going to school only more yummy. As you chat with the owners about what’s in season, discover new facts about the things you are learning about too, their little ears are in tune as well. For example, I knew the little factoid about how to ripen avocados with a brown paper bag, but when the sweet little old man at the market was voicing his wisdom on the matter, I didn’t interrupt and let the kids learn. They asked him questions there and we made a science lesson out of it once home because mommy really wanted to eat ripe avocados–hah!

We not only enjoy the above mentioned perks on behalf of the kids, but we love supporting small businesses, along with local growers in Florida and other US states. When you shop small, you feel more connected to the cycle of how you get your food. This only makes me want to take better care in the meals I prepare which overflows to the health of my family. Didn’t think I could get so mushy gushy when it comes to talking about visiting a farmer’s market with kids or food, but I’m learning every day our health is of the utmost importance.

This is a great way to introduce your kids to what is good for them, as well as educating then on where their food comes from. The other great thing about this is that your kids will be less fussy about eating “vegetables”, more willing to try new foods, and as they get older you are able to go out for meals without having to worry that they won’t eat something.

I love our local farmers market. It’s not year round though, although the opening day is always mothers day weekend and I loved going that weekend! Thank you for the great ideas!
