Our Healthy Lifestyle Transformation Family Progress

Best Healthy Life, Fave Finds, Food, Fun With Kids, Mom Life

We are just about two months into this healthy lifestyle transformation. Boy is it a process, but anything good takes a little work right?! You can read about the full story of why we started this journey here, but in a nutshell, it was just flat out needed. I felt blah, I turned to fast food more often than I care to admit and was just overwhelmed with not taking better of myself. This of course overflowed onto my family and something had to be done. I didn’t want to start a fad diet just to revert or go half in, so I went ALL in. We are talking food, beauty, clothing and home products. I know you’re probably thinking that’s overkill, but initially I started with food and thought, “what’s the point of eating better if other things I use are yuck?!” So, here’s a little update of where we are at and a few favorites I’ve found so far along the way.

*I am not a doctor. Any life changes you feel in your heart after reading this should be discussed with your physician first or researched further on your own to ensure a best fit to your lifestyle. I am a nurse by trade and do have a general understanding of body mechanics and nutrition with heavy research done before notating anything additional I write.

healthy lifestyle foods, no diet

I’m strictly aiming for health–I haven’t even weighed myself, because that doesn’t matter. I know I feel better on the inside and anything that comes as a result of that is just extra. By subbing in healthier meal options you naturally will have a lower caloric intake and the quality has so much more substance. My choices before often were loaded with calories and, well, nasty junk.

I parted ways with coke (shocking, I know) eliminating that huge sugar source and added in smoothies. Being careful to watch the although healthy sugars from fruit in those and getting fresh greens and/or superfood powder in as well did the trick. I credit these to really changing my taste buds initially. I craved fresh things over processed, I could barely eat anything heavy at all after enjoying the crispness a smoothie offers. There was one evening I tried to eat rotisserie chicken and it made me gag on the first bite. Another day I had a date day with my daughter to a cupcake shop and I. couldn’t. eat. my. red. velvet. cupcake. Woah, right?! Then…I ate a salad, like a real salad and that was how I knew things were really changed.

You can find some of my favorite smoothie making needs here.

One of my favorite things along the way has been avocado. I can eat it with anything really–toast, just topped with salt and pepper, cilantro lime seasoning or as guacamole. I liked it before, but didn’t crave it. Now, I think I need an avocado loving intervention. In an effort to not suffer alone in my love, I’ll share my chunky guacamole recipe for you. It has chunks of avocado, red pepper, red onion, cilantro and Italian dressing that’s homemade. #sorrynotsorry

I’ve made small adaptions like subbing in a little Raw Sugar for my coffee, heading to our local farmer’s market to encourage more fresh fruits and veggies, using Essential Oils more thoroughly, buying in bulk at Costco or Amazon (linking up our store) and allowing the kids to help prep meals to build excitement.

Natural Bath and Body Soap Shampoo Conditioner Lip Balm Safe

Like I mentioned above, there was no sense in making a change in what I ate if I was allowing chemicals into my body another way. This part is more of a process because the market on natural products is a little more tough to navigate. There are some really fabulous organic lines out there, but they certainly are not as prevalent on the shelves. Why there are so many chemical filled items even allowed on the market, I won’t understand, but one day there will be more.

Grown Alchemist really showed me that great quality products can still feel modern. Their packaging across the board has a clean cut, black and white text that shows all the things you won’t find in their items like parabens, carcinogens and the sort. View the full post on my favorites: their shampoo, conditioner, exfoliant, bath bar and lip balm. They feel good and smell even better with scents like Peppermint, Rosemary and Rosewood. LOVE!

Natural Makeup Ilia Combination Stick Blush Eye Shadow Lipstick

I am not generally a big makeup wearer day to day. Maybe once or twice a week you’ll find me with powder, eye shadow and mascara–that’s about it, because, well, mom life. I am attempting ways to decrease this even further, or if I do put anything on, that it is top notch natural like the makeup from Ilia.

I tried out the Multi-Stick thinking it was a great fit for on the go mom life as it can be used as blush, eye shadow and lipstick. The At Last color is a dusty rose blend that definitely keeps a fresh look. It has organic avocado oil (it’s no wonder I love it), shea butter and Vitamin E. Below I only used the multi-stick, nothing else applied. Next, I’d like to try their Illuminator, Mascara and Translucent Powder.

thoughtful toothpaste

Let’s talk teeth. You’d think you’d be pretty safe with toothpaste, but agh…the more I researched it, the more disappointed I got. Common toothpastes include plastic microbead pellets that can get stuck in your gums causing irritation. They also contain Lauryl Sulfate that makes suds to expel grime, but contains carcinogenic by-products. Oh, and DEA which can be a hormone disrupter…to name a few. I’ll be working on sharing more about that in the future, but for now, let’s talk about what I love about LEBON toothpaste.

Organic Cruelty Free Vegan Friendly Toothpaste With Cinnamon Mint Tea Leaves Papaya

Firstly, have you ever seen a more beautiful toothpaste container?! Each toothpaste flavor contains organic green tea and aloe vera to naturally prevent bacterial growth and plaque formation. To top it all off, you’ve never heard of more delicious sounding toothpaste:

  • Le White– A sweet Moroccan mint plus green tea and papaya extracts, a powerful natural whitener.
  • Villa Noacarlina– A delicious fresh mint fused with a hint of cinnamon.
  • Tropical Crush-Golden flavors of pineapple fruit mixed with rooibos tea and mint. Don’t tell the other flavors, but this is my favorite.
  • Sweet Extravagance– Rose meets orange blossom and a little hint of mint.

All the flavors can be found at David Pirrotta online. The toothpaste is made in France using cruelty-free, vegan-friendly, certified organic ingredients.

Enjoy the journey back to natural earth grown products. It is interesting how so many are reverting back to what was once the norm.
I grew up in a home like yours; we ate from farm to table fresh foods. My mom was a nutritionist and we weren’t allowed any sweets not even birthday cake. It was natural, organic all the way.
My personal philosophy is everything in moderation. Best wishes! 🙂

Absolutely! Totally agree moderation is key! I guess I’ll be labeled as semi-crunchy hehe because I don’t want to withhold treats and things from my kids, but want the majority of what we eat/use to be as best as possible! Thank you so much for sharing with me Elizabeth!

I love that you are doing this! I’m anti-diet because I just don’t think they are healthy. Swapping fast food for healthy food is the way to go, in my opinion. And great job giving up soda!

Looks like you guys are doing awesome! I love your mindset of healthy eating over diet. I think that is much more of an sustainable way to lead a healthy life than short term changes.

This is great. We are trying to be healthier too. We’ve just started with doing better about meal preparation. I didn’t even think about things like natural cleaning products.
