Making Time To Workout

Lets face it, we all wish we could workout on a very regular basis, but LIFE happens or we get in our own way. I am a wife, a mother of two and I own my own handmade jewelry business out of our home. I am pulled in so many directions, not just in the mommy department or in the business, but as a wife and individual as well. Am I alone in this? It can be so frustrating, I know, so I’ve come up with some tips to help. I truly believe that when you put in a little effort to creating a routine, over time, it will become a habit. A very beneficial habit: making the time to workout.

create a workout calendar

This allows you to schedule your days accordingly and mentally prepare for your workout.  If I’m able to, I get out a full monthly calendar, other wise, I at least schedule my workouts on Sunday for that week. If you’re trying to get into the gym 3-4 times a week, write in what body parts you want to target in the gym for that day. Or schedule it according to your workout classes or around your personal schedule.

be prepared with a gym bag

​This is for the days that you might be able to squeeze in a workout if needed. I totally regretted that workout today, said NO ONE EVER! What’s the harm in having a little gym bag ready in your trunk or by the front door so it’s in sight when you leave in the morning. For me, since I’m home all day, instead of rolling out of bed, eating breakfast and then tending to Kendyl in my jammies, I make sure I put on my gym clothes first, then start about my daily routine.

be willing to improvise

For the times all the machines are taken or you might need to do a home or park workout, you can use these easy to carry resistance bands ($34.87) that come with their own bag or exercise ball ($18.99) from URBNfitThere are times that when I am able to workout on the fly, but it just so happens that everyone and their mama is working out too. My biggest dread is that all the benches are taken, so instead I take the opportunity to work on my least favorite body part, like abs or maybe some cardio. If it’s beautiful out, you can even take your workout outside. There are many workouts that you can do on a park bench!

get a workout partner(s)

 This will help you be accountable. This is a big one, for me. It’s good to feed off of each other as well. When you set your schedule with someone else, you’re less likely to reschedule. I have my husband as my accountability partner and I love our workouts together. Lately with our schedule, it’s been tough… so instead, he makes sure he takes the kids for a little and that forces me to go to the gym. Not to say that I’m not thankful, but when I’m already dwelling in my excuses, it makes it even harder to get in there. Which leads me to my next tip.

be aware of your excuses

​If you know them, you know how to combat them. My accountability partner, AKA, my husband, is aware of mine as well. Believe me, I have A LOT, but it’s good to remember why you want to get in better shape. For yourself, for your kids, for your spouse/significant other. Think about those things when you try to use the “I’m too tired,” “I have laundry to do,” or insert “anything that shouldn’t be more important than your health.”

go easy on yourself

​There are times you just can’t make it due to unavoidable circumstances. It’s ok, I’ll say that one again…it’s OK. You can push yourself a little more during your next workout. I know it’s hard enough dealing with whatever it is your battling in your daily lives, so don’t be so hard on yourself when you just cannot for the life of you, get a work out in. It may be just your body telling you you need to rest today. What ever it is, it’s not a big deal! You have tomorrow, reset your day and make it happen then. No one’s judging you! You got this.

 find childcare 

(if your a mama)- let’s face it, it is one of the biggest hurdles to getting our behinds in the gym. If your gym doesn’t have childcare, find a reliable friend or family member who can watch your little during your workout sessions even check your local YMCA. When I first got back into the swing of things, it was tough without a babysitter. Luckily our local Y had a great gym and daycare. I would not have known, had it not been for a friend who suggested it.
