{reaching for the stars AND grabbing them}

ashley solberg

Your whole life you’ve probably heard “reach for the stars,” but why doesn’t anyone say to grab them? Sounds so silly right? But think about it, if all you do is reach for them, that doesn’t imply they are actually obtained. So we are officially going to change that statement to “reach for the stars AND grab them.” I mean, it is what we are striving to do each day. We pick a task and then werk werk werk werk werk. Yes, I went there and yes, I did a little jig while typing it.

I know we all have a story of how we ended up in this spot–fighting to be our own boss, dreaming bigger, wanting better for our families. I know for me, it came out of no where, complete and utter no where. I was in full on mom mode for over four years prior and finally woke up out of my sleep deprived state and thought, “what am I doing and who am I?” I didn’t know the answers to my own

questions and it scared me. For months, I was in a fog, wondering what I wanted out of my life, how I could do what I wanted(when I figured that out) and how it could make things better for our family.

One day it all just came together. I had that ah-hah moment, much like many of you have probably had. I found something that compiled every thing I’ve ever loved doing in my entire life. Blogging. Check marks were applied to the following: faith, being an encourager, life with littles, fashion, food, DIY, travel. I get to do all of those and then share them with everyone on the big ol’ world wide web. In that same breath of excitement, the “oh boy, what am I getting into” also wracked my brain. Nurse by trade here, so I diagnosed myself with selfdoubtatosis and whatififailitis. I gave my self a dose of Get-Over-It-Girl and Live-Your-Life-To-The-Fullest and took the leap.

I joined forces with some of the most beautiful inside and out ladies and brought them on board to contribute to our site. I saw this vision of many different lives lived leading to different perspectives, different life lessons and different stories to tell. Because of that very concept, our name, She Is {Blank Space}, was so clear to me. Firstly, it allowed us to spark interest because we came out of no where with an out of the norm name and probably shared one too many posts out of excitement–oops. Secondly, it gave us options, like unlimited, never ending options, because you just fill in the blank for that bad boy. Of course at the time, I didn’t understand that concept in that respect, but knew I wanted flexibility going forward for the big dreams I had for it all. So that was my reach for the stars phase, phew!

Having no blogging experience(unless you can even count my blog I had back in middle school), I had so much to learn. With working a full time job, having three little ones that includes a set of twins, being highly involved in our church and an unmentionable amount of laundry piles, I have to give myself little bits of credit along the way. That is what I call the grabbing part. If you never feel like you’ve met a task or reached a goal, it will only feel like you are treading water and eventually, you will quit.

So let’s just avoid that quitting part, because baby, we ain’t going that way! I know you don’t want that and I don’t want that for you in any way, shape, or form. Here’s a few tips I have gathered that have helped gratify the sense of accomplishment needed to keep things going…

  • Think battles not wars-Take each day for what it is. Don’t look too far ahead, except for your “where you want to be in a year.” Take that big goal and focus on the small things it takes to get there. This will keep you from feeling overwhelmed and avoiding work all together our of frustration.
  • Give yo self some credit-Like for real, give yourself credit where it is due. Got out of bed and went straight to work (after coffee of course)? Credit. Got ten new Twitter followers without lifting a finger? Credit. Got a new product listed in your store? Credit. All of those little things that don’t seem to mean much–do. They might not be your blood, sweat, and tears sort of things, but they all are little puzzle pieces making up your masterpiece. It’s like doing the outside edge of the puzzle and working inward. Piece by piece, it all comes together. Take joy in the little things as it keeps your attitude positive and away from falling into a funk.
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff-So maybe that one prospective client didn’t respond, but you got 100 likes on an Instagram picture. Sure the client would have lead to immediate business, but who knows what may come from some of those likees. You’re showing them amazing content, creating a connection and building yourself a foundation that can only lead to good things to come.
  • Learn from the misses-I know how it feels to have that one thing you think will surely be a hit, be a total miss. I remind myself of something my Pastor once said, that Thomas Edison missed the mark on the light bulb over 1,000 times before success. What if he threw in the towel that last attempt before he did it? I chuckle imagining him saying something like, “suck it up buttercup.” He knew he was right on the cusp of greatness and dredged forward, making an improvement to each new light bulb based on the mistake made before.

So there ya have it, a few ways to kick your day in the behind and grab those stars you are reaching for. Eventually, you’ll have quite the collection in your jar and that light will shine so brightly, it can’t be missed.
